Bishop Conaty – Our Lady of Loretto High School, originally named "Los Angeles Catholic Girls' High School", was the first archdiocesan high school built to serve the needs of young Catholic women throughout the Los Angeles area and was erected in memory of Bishop Thomas Conaty. The hiring of personnel was also innovative. Whereas most Catholic schools at the time and after were administered by one religious community, Catholic Girls’ High School employed the talents of six religious communities. Since 1923 the school has graduated well over 14,000 students. Our Lady of Loretto High School was opened in September, 1949 during the episcopate of Cardinal James Francis McIntyre. During its forty year history, the school offered a curriculum of studies that challenged the young women to meet their educational goals and to reach their fullest potential. A changing community and changing times necessitated the merging of the two schools. Our Lady of Loretto-Bishop Conaty High School was created in 1989. In July, 1994 the name was officially reversed to Bishop Conaty- Our Lady of Loretto High School. Today our student body is over 300 young women and we are staffed by a lay faculty who are talented and dedicated instructors. Our programs have evolved from blackboards to interactive whiteboards, but our mission remains the same; empowering young women to be tomorrow’s leaders. We have much to celebrate in all that has been accomplished in the last nine decades, for the present dedication, and for all that is to be accomplished in the future. The legacy of educating young women throughout the Los Angeles area continues…
