English 9 (Period 1) Assignments

All rewrites are due.  

Complete the grammar worksheet page 4 "Compound and Collective Nouns."  Do both exercises A and B.  

Myth Book - READ pp. 47-49.  (The stories are "Arachne," "Marpessa and Idas," and "Daphne.")  Complete the Cartoon Box exercise.

Finish the Perseus exercise you started in class.

Grammar Book:  Page 5, Exercise 2.  Write out the sentences.

Read the following stories in your myth book or from the website below:

"Orpheus and Eurydice" 41
"Pygmalion and Galatea" 24
"Baucis and Philemon" 44
"Cupid and psyche" 45
"Aurora and Tithonus" 46

Use the cartoon boxes or blank paper to illustrate six scenes of one story or six scenes from a variety of stories.  Write a sentence below each box that explains the scene.  The two links below will help you with two of the stories.  Another very useful site is:

TEST on the ancient Greek and Roman gods and goddesses.  Know their Greek and Roman names, positions, and symbols. SPELLING COUNTS.

Read and take notes on the stories of Theseus and Jason found on pages 32-37 in your Mythology book.  It would REALLY help to go on-line and read the stories on these two links:

1. TEST on To Kill a Mockingbird.
2. Turn in your gods/goddesses flash cards.

Free-read for at least fifteen minutes, and write a reading response.  The response should not be a summary. Have an opinion. React to what the characters are doing.  Where do you think the story will go from here?  Why?

Free-reading:  Do at least fifteen minutes of free-reading for four nights and write a paragraph after each fifteen minute session.  What do you write? Well, write your reaction.

Vocabulary: Complete the lesson five exercises in your vocabulary book; ODDS ONLY.

Reading Plus: You need to have twelve RP Sessions completed.

Read chapters twenty-five and twenty-six.  Write a reaction to chapter twenty-five.  You may type or write out your response as long as you provide a rough draft with your final draft. 

Be ready for a reading quiz on chapters twenty-two to twenty-six.

Vocabulary Book: Complete the exercises on pages 23-26, ODD NUMBERS ONLY.
Also, read chapter 21 in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Vocabulary Test 3.  

On Monday, you will have to turn in a Reaction Paper to chapters 19 and 20.  Read both chapters carefully and make sure your reaction discusses both chapters.

Brainstorm notes about a friend or family member who has been a teacher or major influence in your life.  The brainstorm should include details and examples.

For Tuesday you must have read Chapters 16 & 17 in To Kill a Mockingbird. You must also turn in a response paper for these chapters.  The response paper should be your honest reaction to what you understood and what you didn't understand in the chapters.  Have an opinion about the chapters and explain everything you write with examples from the chapters.  If you saw the movie you may compere the chapters to the scenes in the movie.

Due Tuesday, typed, double spaced, a minimum of 1/2 page.

For Tuesday Read Chapter 13 in To Kill a Mockingbird.  

Also, complete pages 13-18 in your vocabulary book ODD NUMBERS ONLY.  You don't have to do the "Writing Extended Responses" at this time.

For Monday, you have to read chapter 12.   Read carefully.

You should have read chapter 11.  

You have to have read chapter 10 in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Chapters 7 & 8 in To Kill a Mockingbird.  Also be ready for  a reading quiz.

Read chapter 1 of To Kill a Mockingbird.  Then write your response to what you read.  Your homework must be typed. Double spaced.  I expect your response to be at least half a page.  Some questions you could respond to are:

• What did you think of chapter 1? Why?
• What did you understand or what didn't you understand?  Why?
• What do you think of Dill and Jem?
• What do you think of Boo Radley?  Do you feel sorry for Boo?  Why?

You may also come up with your own comments about the characters and what they do in the chapter.  Please read the chapter and keep your response honest.  You may also write about the things you didn't understand so we can discuss them in class.

Students who cannot type their work at home will find the library open at 7:30 Monday morning.  Printer copies are $ .10 each.
